Our running days

Find out when we are running trains this year

All public trains for the the year are listed here, and run to a standard timetable between 2pm and 5pm unless otherwise indicated. Our carriage gallery, museum and model railway are open on most running days too.

Trains run to Inch Abbey only on most operating days, with the exception of some special event days.

Please note! Train times and other details are subject to change throughout the year. Please check this website closer to the date for up-to-date information before you travel to Downpatrick.

St. Patrick’s Landing

Sunday 12th March

We’ll be running trains in connection with the St Patrick’s Landing event at Inch Abbey, kicking off a week of celebrations and events in the town. Trains will run from Downpatrick Station to take visitors to the Abbey, and back again when the event is over.

St. Patrick’s Day ‘Shamrock Specials’

Friday 17th March

Park your car at Inch Abbey station and take a train trip straight into the town’s street carnival and join in the commemorations of the Patron Saint of Ireland. Heritage steam and diesel trains operate throughout the afternoon.

The Easter Eggspress

Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th & Monday 17th April

Have an Easter break with a difference. Take the train from Downpatrick to Inch Abbey, and meet the Easter Bunny. All children get a chocolate egg… if you get to them before our loco crews!

May Day & Bank Holiday Trains

Monday 1st May and Monday 29th May

If you’re at a loose end on a Bank Holiday Monday, then a visit to our heritage railway is the prefect way to pass the afternoon.

Summer Running Season

Saturdays and Sundays from June 17th to September 10th

Monday Bank Holiday 28th August

Enjoy a nostalgic trip into the past each Saturday and Sunday through the summer. As well as your train ride and visit to our other attractions, you can walk to Inch Abbey and on special event days you can meet the monk who guards the legacy of the abbey.

Halloween Ghost Trains

Dates to be confirmed

Dare you travel out to the Haunted Graveyard where the Ghosts rise from the dead? And meet Merlin the Wizard on board his haunted Ghost Train! Children receive a present, if they can get past the Ghosts… Merlin likes the kids (and the parents) to be dressed up as scarily as they can!

The Lapland Express

Saturdays and Sundays for 4 weeks before Christmas

Our popular Santa’s Lapland Express trains are now advanced booking only. This year we are running on the following dates:

  • 25th and 26th November
  • 2nd and 3rd December
  • 9th and 10th December
  • 16th and 17th December

Meet Santa Claus on board his steam train and have a one-to-one meeting with him. Children’s entry is dependent on being good throughout the year.

Mince Pie Specials/New Year trains

Saturday 30th December

Relax after the hubbub of Christmas and New Year with a Mince Pie and journey through the Co. Down countryside on a train hauled by a heritage diesel locomotive. A great day out for the family, and also a highlight  for any diesel fans out there.
